Alleged Drunk Driver Crashed Into Kalamazoo Home
A house in Kalamazoo sustained considerable damage after an alleged drunk driver crashed into it and then left the scene, resulting in a search for the suspect and his eventual arrest.
The house is located on West Michigan Avenue near the campus of Western Michigan University. In addition to the damage to the house, power lines were also knocked down by the crash. Authorities inspected the home before letting the residents back in.
The driver of the vehicle left the scene of the accident, and a K-9 unit was brought in to help with the search. Police found a 21-year-old Kalamazoo man at a house on Westbrook Street. He was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence and driving on a suspended license.
Police said no one inside the home was injured.
In 2012, the most recent year for which complete statistics are available, there were 10,014 alcohol related crashes in the state of Michigan. The same year, there were 35,748 drunk driving arrests, resulting in 16,469 convictions.
